About ATP Livslang Pension

ATP Livslang Pension is a lifelong supplementary pension which you are entitled to receive when you start receiving your Danish state-funded old-age pension.

The Specifics

As a wage-earner in Denmark, Danish law requires you to contribute a fixed percentage of your pay to the ATP Livslang Pension scheme. These contributions (ATP-bidrag) are deducted at source, meaning they are deducted automatically from your pay. If you are self-employed however, it is up to you to decide if you want to make the contributions and provide yourself with a supplementary pension.

You are required to pay ATP contributions if you:

  • Are a wage earner or if you receive public benefits
  • Are aged 16 years and over
  • Work in Denmark or have been posted abroad for short-term work by a Danish employer
  • Work at least 9 hours a week

How much do you have to pay?

As a general rule, you contribute a third of the amount yourself, and your employer contributes the other two-thirds.
Example: If you receive a monthly salary and work full-time (at least 117 hours), DKK 90 will be deducted from your pay. Your employer tops up your contribution with DKK 180. This means that the total ATP contribution will be DKK 270 per month.

How much pension will you receive?

Your ATP Livslang Pension will be paid out to you from when you reach pensionable age and for the rest of your life –- no matter how much money you have saved up.

The size of your pension depends on how much money your employers and you yourself have contributed over the years. Pensions of less than DKK 2,500 a year before tax will be paid out as a lump sum when you reach pensionable age.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you if have questions about your pension.

What do you need to do?

It is important to inform ATP if you are living abroad. This is because we only receive information about addresses in Denmark from the National Registration Office.

What does ATP do?

A few months before you reach pensionable age, ATP will send you a letter with specific information about how the money will be paid out to you.

For more information, see Claim your pension

In case of death

When you die, your surviving dependants will receive a lump-sum payment from ATP Livslang Pension. They do not inherit the right to the contributions you have paid in.

For more information, see In case of death.

Supplementary pension

ATP Livslang Pension is part of the Danish welfare society and gives old-age pensioners a bit of extra money to live on.
